VTRC is the research unit of the Virginia Department of Transportation, affiliated with the University of Virginia since our founding in 1948. Our 55 scientists conduct research in a wide variety of areas: concrete and asphalt materials, non-destructive testing, structures and pavements, safety and legal studies, transportation planning, traffic engineering, socioeconomics and finance, ITS, and history. In addition to sponsoring research by its own staff, the Council has a growing contract research program. The Council publishes an average of 35-40 reports and 25-30 Research Briefs short, reader-friendly summaries of completed research projects) each year.
