Slip away lighting standard
. Each of the three slip base strain gage bolts were tightened as close to 44,500 N as possible prior to the test. The actual total clamping load was 127,760 N. The pickup truck struck the light pole 25 mm rearward of the intended location. The force pressing on the struck side of the pole began to build. The left side of the truck was pushed inward until the C-section frame rail was reached. The frame rail imparted the force necessary to activate the slip base. The slip base began to slip 0.032 s after initial contact. The tension in bolts 1 and 2 dropped just after contact. Both bolts dropped to approximately 35,000 N for a period of approximately 0.025 s before dropping off to zero. Bolt #3 measured a minor increase in tension at impact then dropped off to zero. The pole base exited the foundation base plate by 0.068 s. The pole remained in contact with the truck until the truck came to rest. Bolt #1 remained within the notch on the slip base foundation base plate. Bolt #2 fell 1200 mm to the right side of the foundation base plate. Bolt #3 was launched downstream by the pole base during base activation. The bolt landed 11 m from its original installed location. Table 11 summarizes the strain gage bolt data.
